“How are the lessons going?” Samantha gave him a serious look.

Taylor blinked at her. “Um, fine. Why? Are there concerns?”

“No. I’m just doing a check-in.”

“Overall, great.”

“But?”

Taylor glanced toward Samantha’s open office door, then got up to shut it.

She raised an eyebrow when he returned to his seat.

“So, I had a one-on-one with Jack Malone today.”

She sighed and brushed her strawberry blonde hair behind her ears. “Didn’t go well, I take it?”

“Not so much.” Taylor grimaced.

“I wish I could say I was surprised. He’s a misogynistic asshole.” The venom in her voice was startling and Taylor blinked.

“I feel like I should be asking you what happened.”

She shrugged. “Nothing concrete. He’s … made his interest in me known and I shut it down, obviously.”

“Did you talk to HR?”

“Yes. But it was subtle enough that it’s tricky.” She gave Taylor a tight little smile. “And let’s be realistic, their role is to protect the franchise overall. I have my doubts that they’d back me over Malone.”

Taylor leaned forward. “Have you talked to Zane Murphy? I mean, as captain …”

“Yeah, I did. And he’s been great. He promised he’d have a word with Malone. The coaches have been informed too. But we all know the higher ups don’t seem inclined to do much.”

“True.”

She glanced at Taylor. “What were you saying about him?”

“Oh, he’s just … clearly not into this whole figure-skating thing.” Taylor waved it off. “Lots of shitty little comments. I get the impression he’s even less into a gay man teaching it but who knows? I don’t like him. Way less serious than what you’re talking about though.”

“This is just between the two of us, okay?” Samantha said. “But apparently he really had issues with all of the guys coming out.”

“Great. So, a misogynist and a homophobe. Fun!”

Samantha sniffed. “They so often go hand-in-hand.”

“True.”

“Did you say something to HR?”

“No. I mean, it’s nothing I can really prove or even an obvious statement he made. He’s never said anything that’s outright hostile. He gets this attitude like he’s too good for the lessons, you know?”

Samantha nodded. “He’s one of those guys who’s gotten everything he’s ever wanted, and he doesn’t do well with being told no.”

“Exactly.” Taylor sighed. “But I’ve wasted enough of my time talking about that asshole. Let’s move on.”

They discussed the team and how the media campaign was going before Taylor glanced at the time and realized he needed to wrap it up.

“Okay, one more lesson today.” Taylor stood with a sigh. “Thankfully, it’s Hajek. He may not speak a ton of English, but he’s super nice and he’s a great skater.”

Samantha smiled. “Well, that’s something.”

“Actually, most of the guys are great.”

“They are. They’re a good group.”

“Minus Jack Malone.”

“Minus Jack Malone,” she agreed. “Ahh well, I guess they can’t all be winners.”

Taylor thought of Jamie and had to suppress a smile as he walked toward the door.

“Hey, how are things going with Walsh?”

He turned back, eyes wide. “Good, why?”

She shrugged. “Just wanted to make sure there weren’t any issues with your family situation.
